C'mon, Get Happy
(Originally published in Chatelaine, February 2004)

We asked, "What makes you happy?" and wow, you told us--at last count, nearly 5000 of you responded to our online happiness questionnaire. The usual suspects popped up: there are lots of cuddly pets, grinning babies and considerate partners out there who are making you happy right down to your bones. But bliss comes in unexpected places too. As one reader felt moved enought to write, happiness is "when I walk into the grocery store to find that a new chocolate bar has just been imported from Belgium."

Find Your Happy Weight

(© Bonnie Schiedel. Originally published in Chatelaine, September 2005)

Pam Jesson knows she’s at her happy weight because she can smile when she’s stark naked and looking in a mirror. (Really!) "You know what? I am content with what I see. I have tummy fat and a saggy butt, but my body is real, and I like it," she says. "I am comfortable in my skin, like I’m comfortable in my life." And, says Jesson, who is an administrative assistant in Calgary, she’s healthy too. "I feel so good, mentally and physically."

So, are you at your happy weight?

The Best Gifts Of All
(© Bonnie Schiedel. Originally published in Chatelaine, December 2005)

In my family, few Christmas mornings go by without a treasure hunt in search of an unwieldy present that just won’t fit under the tree. A series of clues (bonus points if they rhyme; extra bonus points if they rhyme badly) send the recipient around the house and yard. And while the gifts themselves are cool—ski poles, a garden trellis, a folk art planter—what really makes them meaningful and memorable is the thought and affection that went into creating the whole experience. I love to think of my parents giggling as they craft a particularly dreadful rhyme. (Plus nothing beats the sight of a loved one floundering around outside in pajamas and snowboots looking for that next clue that’s hidden in the shed.) Here, eight readers share stories about their best holiday gifts that didn’t come in a box.

A Hundred Grand
(© Bonnie Schiedel. Originally published in Chatelaine, November 2005)

It’s everyone’s fantasy: a cash windfall. We asked three readers from different cities, incomes and backgrounds to describe a pretend spending spree. There were a couple rules: no paying off the mortgage or other debts, and no socking the money away in a bank account or under the mattress. In other words, spend, baby, spend!

As it turns out, stuff like "flat screen TV" and "12-carat tiara" didn’t even get mentioned. Instead, juicy, life-enriching experiences—for themselves and for other people—were at the top of the list. And our big-time spenders realized that how they used their imaginary cash revealed a whole lot about themselves and who they want to become. Here’s what they discovered.
